Is a solar battery worth considering for your Adelaide home?
A battery may be a useful addition if your panels export surplus electricity during the day while your household buys electricity in the evening. It stores energy for later use, helping you cover part of the gap between solar generation and household demand.
The value depends on how your home actually uses power. A household running cooling, cooking appliances and entertainment after sunset has a different storage requirement from one that uses most of its electricity while the sun is shining. Your import tariff, feed-in tariff, available solar surplus and installed cost all affect the result.

How much does solar battery installation cost in Adelaide?
Your installed battery price depends on the selected equipment and the electrical work needed at your property. A battery-only advertisement is not enough to compare two proposals: check whether both include compatible power conversion equipment, installation, commissioning and the same backup capability.
| Cost component | What to check in your quote |
|---|---|
| Battery configuration | Exact model, module quantity and usable storage capacity in kWh. |
| Inverter arrangement | Whether existing equipment can stay, or a compatible inverter is included. |
| Backup equipment | Gateway or changeover equipment, nominated circuits and backup output limits. |
| Electrical installation | Cable runs, mounting, switchboard work and any location-specific protection. |
| Incentive treatment | Gross price, any eligible discount, GST and the final customer payment. |
| Handover and support | Monitoring setup, documentation, warranty terms and support contacts. |

What size solar battery do you need?
Battery capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh); power output is measured in kilowatts (kW). Capacity affects how much energy you can store. Output affects which appliances you can run at the same time. Both matter when choosing a system.
| Usable capacity to consider | Potential household use | Key question |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately 5–10 kWh | Covering a smaller evening load or part of overnight demand. | How much energy do you use after solar production drops? |
| Approximately 10–15 kWh | A broader share of evening household electricity use. | Can your available surplus recharge this capacity regularly? |
| Approximately 15–20 kWh | Higher overnight demand or additional backup energy reserve. | Do seasonal usage and inverter output support the larger size? |
| More than 20 kWh | Substantial daily demand or a specifically modelled storage requirement. | Will the extra capacity be used often enough to justify its cost? |
For example, a home importing 8 kWh between sunset and morning does not automatically need a 20 kWh battery. Check winter generation, usable capacity, conversion losses and any reserve held for outages before deciding.

Adding a battery to existing solar
Retrofitting starts with identifying your current panels, inverter and connection arrangement. An AC-coupled battery can be an option where the existing solar inverter stays in place. Other designs use a compatible hybrid inverter to manage solar and battery energy.
Neither approach is automatically the right choice. The assessment should consider equipment age, supported battery combinations, electrical capacity, monitoring and how the system behaves during an outage.
If your panels are also due for an upgrade, compare the retrofit with a new residential solar system. Designing generation and storage together can help avoid mismatched equipment.

Solar battery rebates for Adelaide households
Eligible South Australian installations may receive support through the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Batteries connected to new or existing solar may qualify, subject to the program’s eligibility requirements.
From 1 May 2026, support is tiered by usable capacity: the first 14 kWh receives 100% of the applicable STC factor, the portion above 14 to 28 kWh receives 60%, and the portion above 28 to 50 kWh receives 15%. These are percentages of the factor, not percentages off the installation price.
The applicable factor depends on installation date. Ask for your eligibility, estimated STC discount and final payable amount to be shown separately in writing.

Backup power: decide what you want to keep running
A battery does not automatically keep a house powered during a blackout. The installation needs a supported backup arrangement, and the output available in backup mode may differ from normal operation.
Start with your priorities: refrigerator, lighting, internet equipment or selected power points. Large appliances such as ducted air conditioning, electric ovens and EV chargers can place much higher demands on a backup system.
- Identify the circuits included in the backup scope.
- Check continuous output and appliance starting requirements.
- Confirm how much battery energy will be reserved for outages.
- Ask whether solar can recharge the battery during a grid outage in the proposed design.
- For three-phase homes, confirm which phases and loads will remain supplied.
Backup runtime changes with the starting charge and appliance load. A useful estimate must state both; an unconditional “whole-home backup” promise is not a substitute for a circuit plan.
Your Adelaide battery installation, step by step
- Review your usage. Share your bill, available interval data, solar details and any planned changes to electricity use.
- Assess the property. Check the switchboard, supply type, cable route and possible battery positions. Adelaide summer heat, direct sun exposure and access are practical siting considerations.
- Compare configurations. Review usable capacity, output, backup scope and the complete installed price.
- Confirm connection and installation requirements. Establish the approvals, electrical work and responsibilities that apply before installation is scheduled.
- Install and commission. The installation team fits the agreed equipment and tests the configured system.
- Complete the handover. Review monitoring, operating settings, warranty documents and who to contact for help.
Confirm the expected schedule after the site assessment. Switchboard changes, equipment availability and connection requirements can affect the time between accepting a quote and commissioning.
Understand savings before choosing a battery
Stored solar is not completely free to use later: energy conversion has losses, and electricity sent into a battery is electricity you cannot export for a feed-in credit. A meaningful estimate accounts for both.
Illustrative daily calculation: assume 9 kWh of solar charges a battery, 8 kWh is later delivered to the home, the avoided import rate is $0.35/kWh and the forgone feed-in rate is $0.05/kWh. The estimated energy benefit is (8 × $0.35) − (9 × $0.05) = $2.35 for that day.
These are example assumptions, not current tariff quotes or promised savings. Annual outcomes depend on seasonal cycling, tariffs, degradation, operating settings and household use. Fixed supply charges generally remain.
What about a virtual power plant?
A virtual power plant (VPP) allows a provider to coordinate participating batteries. Before enrolling, compare payments with the contract terms, access to stored energy, backup reserve settings and any restrictions on leaving. Assess the offer against your own usage rather than assuming it will improve every household’s result.
Battery installation enquiries across Adelaide
Ads Solar welcomes enquiries from Adelaide households, including Mawson Lakes, Salisbury, Golden Grove, Modbury, West Lakes, Henley Beach, Magill, Burnside, Morphett Vale and Happy Valley. Provide your postcode so we can confirm service availability and the assessment required for your location.
An older home may need additional switchboard work, while a newer property may need careful planning around garage space or three-phase loads. Your system should reflect those details, rather than a standard package selected only by suburb.
Battery storage for businesses
Commercial projects need a separate assessment of operating hours, load peaks, available solar and tariff structure. Visit our commercial battery storage page to discuss a business installation.
Adelaide solar battery installation FAQs
Can I install a battery without replacing my solar panels?
Often, yes. Your panels may stay in place while the battery connects through a suitable system design. The inverter, electrical installation and equipment compatibility still need assessment.
Will a bigger battery always save more money?
No. Extra capacity only provides additional value when you can charge it and use the stored electricity effectively. Review available surplus, evening demand and the extra installed cost before increasing capacity.
Can a battery run my air conditioner?
It depends on the air conditioner’s electrical demand and the battery system’s output. For blackout use, the air conditioner must also be on a supported backup circuit and remain within starting and running limits.
Where can a home battery be installed?
The permitted position depends on the product and the property. The installer needs to assess access, clearances, environmental exposure and nearby building features before confirming a compliant location.
Can I add more storage later?
Some configurations support expansion, but limits vary by model, inverter and manufacturer requirements. If expansion matters, ask for the supported pathway and any restrictions in writing before purchase.
How do I compare battery warranties?
Compare the warranty period, retained-capacity promise, energy-throughput or cycle conditions, permitted operating use and exclusions. Also check how labour, transport and service claims are handled.
Will I still receive an electricity bill?
Usually, yes. Grid-connected homes can still pay daily supply charges and import electricity when solar generation or stored energy is insufficient. A battery should not be sold as a guarantee of eliminating bills.
What should I send with a quote enquiry?
Start with your suburb, a recent electricity bill, solar system size and inverter model. Mention whether you want backup, have three-phase power or plan to add an EV. Photos of the existing equipment may help the assessment.
