What is an AlphaESS home battery?

An AlphaESS home battery stores electricity for use when you need it, as part of a compatible solar and electrical installation. In a solar home, it can capture available generation that exceeds daytime consumption and supply stored energy when solar output falls.

The SMILE5 combines power conversion and energy management with compatible battery storage. Your selected inverter and battery arrangement determine how the system charges, discharges and supports the home.

For your installation, consider the battery, inverter, monitoring and backup arrangement together. A capacity label alone does not explain how the whole system will perform.

How to choose the right battery size

Start with your evening and overnight consumption, available surplus solar and backup priorities. A large battery can be underused if your solar rarely generates enough excess energy or your household uses little electricity after sunset.

Review actual usage

Use bills and available interval data to understand when your home imports electricity. Seasonal heating and cooling can change the pattern.

Check charging opportunities

Compare daytime solar surplus with the capacity you want to charge. Roof orientation, shading, weather and daytime loads affect what remains.

Allow for backup reserve

Energy held for an outage may reduce what is available for daily use. Discuss the balance between everyday savings and backup duration.

For example, a home using 7kWh overnight has a different storage requirement from one using 17kWh. These are usage examples, not package recommendations. Include losses, operating limits and planned future loads in your assessment.

Can I add an AlphaESS battery to my existing solar?

Potentially, but compatibility must be assessed first. The assessment should identify whether your existing inverter can remain and which connection arrangement is suitable. An AlphaESS battery is not a universal add-on for every inverter.

  • Inverter model: provide the exact make, model and approximate installation date.
  • Solar array: confirm system size, condition and generation history where available.
  • Electrical supply: identify single-phase or three-phase requirements.
  • Switchboard and location: assess space, access and necessary electrical work.
  • Backup goals: identify the circuits you want supported during an outage.

Ask the proposal to explain which equipment stays, what is added or replaced and how the completed system will operate.

Will an AlphaESS battery provide blackout protection?

A suitably designed AlphaESS system can provide backup, but performance depends on the compatible inverter, battery configuration, additional equipment and selected circuits. Whole-home backup should not be assumed.

Refrigeration, selected lighting, internet equipment and suitable power points are sensible priorities to discuss. Air conditioning, electric heating, pumps and EV charging can demand much more power.

Energy capacity and output are different

Kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure stored energy. Kilowatts (kW) measure the rate of power delivery. A battery can have charge remaining while the connected appliances exceed the available output.

Request a written list of supported circuits, excluded appliances and phase limitations. Also ask whether, and under what conditions, solar can recharge the system while the grid is unavailable.

How long can backup last?

As a simplified calculation, 10kWh available to a steady 1kW load represents ten hours before losses and system limits. Higher loads use energy faster. Actual duration varies with starting charge, reserve settings and appliance use.

How solar and battery storage work together

Daytime generation

Your solar panels supply available household demand. Excess generation can charge a compatible battery within the system’s limits.

Evening use

Stored energy can supply the home as solar output falls. The grid can still supply electricity when demand exceeds available battery power or energy.

Monitoring and settings

Review the monitoring provided with your selected system. Ask how to interpret energy flows and balance reserve settings with everyday use.

For a complete installation, explore solar and battery packages and residential solar solutions. Compare 6.6kW, 10kW and 13kW solar systems against your roof and energy profile.

Plan for future energy use

Include planned electric cooking, heating, cooling and vehicle charging in the design conversation. Your future demand may differ from the pattern shown on today’s bills.

If you are considering an electric vehicle, explore our EV charging solutions. Charging while solar is generating may suit your routine and reduce the amount of energy that needs to pass through the home battery.

For battery expansion, ask about compatible modules, installation space, inverter limits and the manufacturer’s conditions. Future upgrades require confirmation for the system already installed.

Understand savings, incentives and warranty terms

A battery can reduce purchased electricity when stored solar supplies energy you would otherwise import. The benefit depends on tariffs, export payments, charging opportunities, losses and the amount of battery capacity used each day.

Ask for an estimate based on your bills and total installation cost. A fixed annual saving or universal payback period cannot represent every household.

Confirm any proposed incentive

Your quotation should identify any incentive included in the calculation, its eligibility requirements and any participation conditions. Do not assume every system qualifies or that the same offer applies across all states.

Check product cover and battery performance cover separately

Request the Australian warranty documents for the exact SMILE5 inverter and battery supplied. A battery performance warranty is different from product warranty cover: their durations, remedies and conditions can differ. Review capacity-retention requirements, operating conditions and claim procedures. Ask separately about installation workmanship coverage and support contacts.

early days and I’ve gotta admit there was a bit of fluffing around, and I was bombarded by all and sundry, so felt a little bit disjointed in the sales process, but the pricing was incredible Tushar and his were more than helpful and the installers were fantastic. I was a it’ll nervous paying the day before the installation, but checked all my boxes and allow that to happen. There were a few things in the quote and layout that they got wrong, but we corrected those on the day so have someone handy but it’s now in an operating. 42 kW battery 10 kW of panels 12,000 W inverter for about $7K less than the closest competitors same spec. Anyway, early days I’m gonna to post as I go but so far I’m saving money according to the system app!
