Solar + battery cost

How much does a solar and battery system cost in Australia?

The cost of a solar and battery package depends on the system design. Solar size, battery capacity, equipment, roof layout and electrical work can all affect the final price.

Solar size Battery starting point Typical suitability Best considered for
6.6kW 10kWh Smaller to medium household Moderate consumption and evening usage
10kW 10–20kWh Medium to large household Higher demand and battery charging
13.2kW 20–30kWh High-energy household Pool, air conditioning and larger evening demand
15–20kW+ 30kWh+ Very high consumption Large properties, EVs and greater electrification

Battery capacity should not be selected from solar capacity alone. Household load profile, evening consumption, available solar generation, tariff structure and desired backup capability should also be assessed.

How it works

How solar and battery storage work together

A properly designed system coordinates solar generation, household consumption, battery charging and grid interaction throughout the day.

☀️ Sun
Solar panels
Your home
🔋 Battery
1

Generate electricity

Rooftop solar panels convert available sunlight into electricity for your household.

2

Power your home first

Solar generation can supply eligible household electricity demand while the system is producing.

3

Store excess energy

Compatible battery systems can store eligible surplus solar generation rather than immediately exporting all of it to the electricity grid.

4

Use stored energy later

The battery can discharge when solar generation is insufficient, including during evening periods.

5

Import from the grid when required

Your home remains connected to the electricity network and can import electricity when household demand exceeds available solar and battery energy.

6

Monitor energy use

Compatible monitoring platforms can show solar production, battery status and household energy flows.

System sizing

What size solar system should I install with a battery?

The solar array needs enough useful generation to supply daytime household demand while providing reasonable opportunities to charge the battery.

6.6kW solar

Often considered for smaller households with moderate electricity consumption and suitable roof space.

10kW solar

A popular option for households with higher usage, larger roofs, battery storage or increasing electricity requirements.

13.2kW solar

Suitable for larger households using substantial electricity for air conditioning, pools, appliances and battery charging.

15–20kW+ solar

Considered for very high household consumption, large properties, EV charging and greater electrification where site and network conditions allow. For larger business loads, explore our commercial solar and industrial solar solutions.

Battery sizing

What size solar battery do I need?

Battery sizing should be based primarily on how much electricity your household is likely to use when solar generation is low, rather than simply choosing the largest battery available.

  • 10kWh battery: may suit lower to moderate evening electricity demand.
  • 20kWh battery: may suit larger households or customers with higher overnight consumption.
  • 30kWh+ battery: may suit high-energy homes, EV owners and households wanting greater stored capacity.

2026 battery incentives

Australian Government battery support in 2026

The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program supports eligible small-scale battery installations through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.

Eligible systems can receive an upfront discount through small-scale technology certificates. In most cases, the retailer or installer arranges this process. Eligibility depends on the battery, installation date, usable capacity and current program rules.

From 1 May 2026, the battery STC calculation changed. The applicable STC factor now tapers across capacity bands, so the effective incentive per additional kilowatt-hour is not necessarily the same for a 10kWh, 20kWh and 30kWh battery.

Important: Battery incentive values can change over time. ADS Solar can confirm available incentives and estimated eligibility when preparing your quote.

Example household

How a solar + battery system can change grid usage

Consider a household using substantial electricity during both the day and evening.

Example only

  • Household usage: approximately 30kWh per day
  • Solar system: 10kW
  • Battery capacity: 20kWh
  • Higher evening electricity demand
  • Air conditioning and household appliances

During suitable daylight conditions, solar generation can supply household loads and charge the battery when surplus energy is available. Stored energy may then be used later, reducing the amount of electricity that needs to be purchased from the grid.

Actual performance and savings depend on location, weather, shading, system orientation, electricity tariff, household behaviour, export limits and equipment efficiency.

Already have solar?

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

In many cases, yes. The best approach depends on your existing inverter, solar array, switchboard, available space, network configuration and the battery technology being considered.

Check inverter compatibility

Some existing systems may work with an AC-coupled battery, while others may benefit from inverter replacement or a different system architecture.

🔋

Review battery capacity

We assess household load and existing solar generation before recommending storage capacity.

Check electrical requirements

Switchboard configuration, battery location, protection equipment and network requirements need to be considered before installation.

Future-ready energy

Solar + battery for EV owners

An electric vehicle can materially increase household electricity consumption, which means solar and battery sizing should consider how and when you intend to charge the vehicle.

  • Daytime solar EV charging
  • Overnight charging requirements
  • Available battery capacity
  • Household peak demand
  • Future EV charger installation
  • Single-phase or three-phase supply

Planning the solar, battery and EV charging strategy together can help avoid installing an energy system that becomes undersized as your household electrifies.

Planning for future electricity demand

Your future energy requirements may include more than today’s electricity bill.

  • Electric vehicles
  • Heat-pump hot water
  • Electric cooking
  • Pool equipment
  • Additional air conditioning
  • Home office or workshop loads

Whole-home or selected-circuit backup

Backup capability depends on the battery, inverter, switchboard configuration, household load and how the system has been designed.

High-power loads may need special consideration, and not every solar + battery installation automatically provides blackout backup.

Blackout protection

Can a solar battery power my home during a blackout?

A compatible battery system can provide backup electricity during an outage when it has been specifically designed and configured for backup operation.

Depending on the equipment and property, backup may be configured for selected essential circuits or a broader portion of the home.

ADS Solar can discuss backup requirements during system design so you understand what appliances and circuits the proposed system is intended to support.
